Brockville Loves Canada 150: Canada Day 2017

Canada Day is approaching and Brockville is hosting tons of activities for you to take part in all day long. From the opening ceremonies and cake cutting all the way to the fireworks after dark, there is non-stop fun for you and your family. We have assembled a time line below based on different participating areas in town. Think we missed something? Be sure to let us know! 
UPDATE: “A decision was made to postpone the fireworks from Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. to Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. due the weather forecast. We have no choice as the fireworks staff need at least 8 hours to prepare and unable to work on the barge when there is lightening.”
Update for access to Blockhouse Island on Saturday and Sunday:

The Regatta organizers will be honouring the 8pm free public admission to Blockhouse on Saturday to allow the public to take part in the local Canada 150 celebration and hear local bands. 
However – on Sunday night for the 10pm fireworks viewing, the public will not have free admittance to Blockhouse as it would be unfair to their ticket holders who have purchased tickets to the show. Instead, Centeen Park will be open to the public from 7pm on, and Hardy Park also offers a great view of the fireworks.

Canada 150 Painted Canoe by Clayton Explores
10am-4pm (approx.) Stop by to see Clayton’s painted canoe on Water Street near the Tourism Office. A note from Clayton: “Over the past two years I have been paddling across Ontario and Southern Quebec and got to experience the most beautiful landscapes. What I hope to do with this project is to promote exploring Canada during this milestone year. I have a 16 foot Canoe that I will be painting with designs, symbols and iconic landscapes from across Canada. Once painted the Canoe will travel across Ontario on the Roof of my Mini stopping at various lakes and rivers where the canoe will be photographed and filmed. The canoe would also stop in city centres to promote exploring Canada. Later the footage will be put into a 5 Part short documentary video”

 
Fulford Place and Homewood Museum         
10am-5pm: Mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation with free activities at Fulford Place and free admission to Homewood Museum.
Bring your family to Fulford Place for some good old-fashioned fun, from crafts to twisted balloons to historical games. Come early – the first 150 visitors will receive a free cupcake!
Homewood Museum in nearby Maitland, one of Ontario’s oldest houses, is also offering free admission on Canada Day. Get a glimpse of the life of Dr. Solomon Jones – a United Empire Loyalist and the area’s first physician – and discover the story behind the internationally known Red Fameuse apple. Fireworks:
Fireworks after dusk (approx. 10pm) launched from a city barge located off-shore in front of the Rowing club area. Viewing from Centeen Park, Blockhouse Island, Hardy Park.

Film Brockville presents National Canadian Film Day 150

On April 19, 2017, great Canadian movies will be available on air, online and on foot at over 1,700 screenings in cinemas, libraries, public squares and anywhere you can show a film. With free events happening across every province and territory, many involving Canadian film talent, NCFD 150 — a Canada 150 Signature Project — promises to be the largest film festival in the world. Ever.
Presented by REEL CANADA, an organization that has been introducing Canadian film to high school students and new Canadians since 2005, NCFD 150 is a tremendous opportunity for Canadians of all ages and backgrounds to gather and enjoy the wealth of work by our nation’s storytellers. On April 19th at 7pm, Film Brockville will be hosting a free screening of ‘Water’ at the Brockville Galaxy as part of this nation-wide event.
Set in the late 1930s against the backdrop of Gandhi’s non-violent protests and campaign to better the condition of women, Water takes place in an ashram where widows both old and young (including a girl of seven) are sent to live out their lives in austerity after the deaths of their husbands. When a beautiful young widow (Lisa Ray) who had been forced into prostitution by the ashram’s imperious overseer begins an affair with a wealthy follower of Gandhi, the stage is set for tragedy. At once intimate and epic, Water was a substantial commercial success and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Ontario supports Brockville with $120,000 for the Rails to Trails Festival

The City of Brockville is proud to announce that it has been awarded full funding of $50,000 by Celebrate Ontario for this summer’s Canada 150 celebration. Combined with the ONTARIO 150 funding received last month of $70,000, Brockville’s Rails to Trails Festival is moving full steam ahead.
“This is wonderful news for the City”, said Lesley White, Manager of Strategic Initiatives for the City of Brockville. “We’re very excited about the festival. It will be a true celebration with something for everyone to enjoy”.
The Rails to Trails Festival will celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, Ontario as a founding province and the opening of the restoration of Canada’s First Railway Tunnel.
The event will take place at Brockville’s beautiful waterfront over four days running from August 10-13 and feature the sights, sounds and delectable aromas of the early 20th century travelling carnival with “Carnivàle Lune Bleue”, the pomp and pageantry of Canada’s First Railway Tunnel opening ceremony and the ONTARIO 150 Tour with all it’s entertaining cultural programing, and YES the World’s Biggest Rubber Duck will be making its appearance too–QUACK!!
And just when you thought that was enough, our neighbours will be cooking up some mouth-watering ribs at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Brockville RibFest on August 10-13 as well.
The Rails to Trails Festival promises to be one of this summer’s most memorable event in the breathtaking 1000 Islands region.

Family Day in Brockville 2017

This Family Day (Monday, February 20th) spend the day exploring indoors and outdoors all over town for special activities and programming planned just for that day!
The Aquatarium will be offering a jam-packed day of family fun and activities on Family Day:

  • 50% off all admissions
  • 10:00am-11:00am: animated Storytime in the Singer Castle Library (more geared toward the younger ones)
  • 11:00am-12:00pm: free family pictures taken with Oscar the Otter at the green screen.
  • 12:00pm: popcorn and a movie in the theatre ‘Trolls’
  • 1:30pm-2:30pm: astronomy presentation in the Pilot House using the Planetarium
  • Ongoing throughout the day: optional programming utilizing the Ropes Course. At each element of the course, there will a team building challenge for participants to complete together. All challenges/tasks are designed to foster trust, communication, and problem-solving.

In addition, on Saturday, Sunday and Monday they will have three family friendly movies starting with Finding Dory that you can view in the theatre for no additional charge.

This Family Day, the Brockville Museum is pleased to once again offer our Back Pack Program to visiting families.
Loaded with interesting things and fun activities, your self-directed scavenger hunt through the museum will reveal behind-the-scenes stories that most visitors never get to hear.
The Brockville Museum is open 10:00 am – 5:00 pm on Family Day, and don’t forget that admission is by donation (the backpacks are provided as a FREE activity with admission).

A Look Back at 2016

In 2016 we saw a lot of new interest in visiting Brockville and the 1000 Islands. With the soft-launch of the Aquatarium in March , Brockville’s newest attraction and 1000 Islands discovery centre, just in time for March-break visitors, word spread like wildfire by news outlets, and social media about the great time being had in Brockville. When our staff attended the National Women’s Show in Ottawa in April to promote Brockville, we couldn’t believe how many people had already heard great things about the Aquatarium and had plans to visit.
In in the summer, we also saw the opening of the new Zipline Adventure Park, Skywood Eco Adventures, just outside of town along the 1000 Islands Parkway. With ways to zip through the trees for all abilities, interests, and ages, we have seen a renewed interest in people wanting to experience the outdoors and see the natural beauty of the region. Additionally, a new way to explore the Brock Trail along our waterfront came about with the opening of new segway tours starting at the Tall Ships Landing building at the waterfront.
A number of new festivals and events sprang up in Brockville this past year as well. We saw the return of the Tall Ships in September, new downtown street events throughout the summer, and the Red Hot and Blue Rockabilly Festival relocate to Brockville. The Brockville Arts Centre received all new sound and digital film equipment and was able to increase the number and type of films that they could show in their beautiful theatre.
With all of these Brockville assets coming together in one year, it’s no wonder we saw so many people out exploring Brockville in 2016.
In 2017, as Canada celebrates its 150th, Brockville will see the re-opening of Canada’s First Railway Tunnel in August and a grand opening ceremony will take place during the new Rails to Trails Festival.
We look forward to watching the growth of our new attractions as they enter their second year of operation and seeing what the new season has in store.

Ontario Culinary Tourism Award Finalist

Brockville’s Island Breakfast Nominated for Ontario Culinary Tourism Award

The ever-popular Island Breakfast on Refugee Island has become award worthy, being named among three finalists in the Ontario Culinary Tourism Event of the Year. The winner will be announced at Ontario’s Annual Tourism Summit in Ottawa to be held November 21-22 in Ottawa.
The awards, organized by the Tourism Association of Ontario, the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation and the Culinary Tourism Alliance recognize groups who have made a significant contribution to Ontario’s tourism industry.
Island Breakfast takes place in June over four days and features local breakfast fare including local eggs (cooked in a variety of ways from a local supplier), maple syrup and strawberries, all from local farms. Over 60 volunteers contribute their time to transport, cook and serve some 1,500 visitors on Refugee Island.
“This event becomes more popular every year and is an ideal opportunity for people to experience the 1000 Islands,” explained David Beatty, Chair of the Volunteer Committee. “Many people would not have the chance otherwise to experience Island Life, and when you couple a ride on the river with excellent food and local entertainment, it is a perfect event!”
Island Breakfast has attracted visitors from as far away as Germany, England, China, United States and New Zealand along with many local residents. Since inception, the event has grown from attracting 700 visitors during a 3-day event to over 1500 patrons in four days.
Net proceeds from funds raised will go toward building a pavilion on the island.
Island Breakfast’s fellow nominees for this award are Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company’s Beau’s Oktober-fest and Spirit Tree Estates Cidery’s Family Day Wassailing Festival. Update: The winner of this category is Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company’s “Beau’s Oktogerfest” – congrats Beau’s!

Tips to get the most out of Brockville Ribfest

Brockville Ribfest is quickly becoming one of Brockville’s favourite annual festivals. Located on the waterfront in Hardy Park, this fun-filled-family-food-festival hosts eight ribbers including: Ribs Royale, Dinosaur BBQ, Crabby’s BBQ, Gator BBQ, Silver Bullet, Billy Bones, Camp 31, and Jack The Ribber. There are also tons of food and merchandise vendors, a bavarian garden, activities in the Kidz Zone, live music and entertainment, all with free admission.
Brockville Ribfest is hosted annually by Big Brothers Big Sisters Leeds and Grenville and is a hugely successful fundraiser for them. Below we have a few tips to help you make the most of your visit this year:

  1. Taste, taste, taste!

Did you know that all of the ribbers offer free samples of their signature barbeque sauces? Before you decide where to buy your ribs from, take a tour of the park and sample sauces from all 8 of the ribbers (pro tip: you don’t have to wait in line to grab a sauce sample, just head straight for the grill and ask them for a sample). Remember that pork is sweet so your sauce will become sweeter once it is on the ribs.

  1. Go with a group

Food tastes better when it is shared with friends and family. Going with a group lets you try out ribs, chicken, and pulled pork from multiple vendors – and it also helps cut down on the time spent waiting in line! Don’t forget to vote for your favourites on the way out – the ribbers love getting People’s Choice Awards!

  1. Buy a bloomin’ onion and  a fully loaded funnel cake

Not only are these treats delicious, once-a-year indulgences, this food cart is run by volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters Leeds and Grenville and the proceeds of the cart go directly back into their programming. Also check out their brand new offerings: deep-fried curds, Mars Bars, and peanut butter cups.

  1. Check out their programming online

Don’t miss your favourite local band or the chance to take your kids to the petting zoo, check out the lineup online on the Brockville Ribfest website before you go.

  1. Go early and go often

As much as you may want to, you can’t eat ribs from all 8 ribbers in one sitting. Plan ahead and start sampling on Thursday. You can also beat most of the lines by heading to Hardy Park earlier in the day for lunch.

  1. Get lots of napkins and wetwipes

Ribfest volunteers are great at cleaning up the tables and making sure that you have lots of napkins and wipes on hand. Make sure your area has been restocked before you sit down, you never know when a sauce emergency will strike.

  1. Vote for your favourites

The ribbers love taking home People’s Choice Awards and they display their wins proudly on trophies and banners hanging behind their booths. Think someone had the best sauce? The best rack of ribs? Best pulled pork? Make sure to vote for them on the way out.

St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival Opens for the 2016 Season

The highly anticipated St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival opened on Saturday with ‘Julius Caesar’ to a large crowd of eager audience members. Located at the Prescott harbour at an outdoor amphitheatre, the play is perfectly located for a Roman experience, and what better way to enjoy theatre than with the beautiful St. Lawrence River as a backdrop?
The St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival is a member of PACT, the Professional Association of Canadian Theatre, and a member of the Shakespeare Theatre Association. With 12 professional actors who perform in both plays (the second play in this year’s festival is ‘Much Ado About Nothing’), the festival was granted a special concession from the Canadian Actors Equity Association to enable them to invite 18 volunteer performers from the local community to play Roman soldiers, senators, and citizens. “Their participation makes this production unique, specific to Prescott, and gives it a texture, visual dynamic and scale that’s never been seen on our stage before” – Rona Waddington, Director’s Notes, Julius Caesar. The extra Romans helped to bring life to the on-stage battles and parades that added to the authenticity of the play, and adds a unique, local touch to the performance.
I personally was not overly familiar with this particular work of Shakespeare, so I was appreciative of the synopsis provided in the festival program which allowed me to have the plot outlined so that I could be free to enjoy the intricacies of the play. The Festival always makes an effort to condense the play so that it is accessible to a wider audience and their performances are never more than a maximum of 2 hours. While Caesar is ultimately assassinated during the first half of the play, I loved the presence that he maintained even after intermission and his embodiment on stage, haunting the remaining players (you will have to watch the play to see it for yourself).
Lawn chairs and cushions can be rented at the gate for $3 or $1 respectively, or you can bring your own if you don’t wish to sit directly on the stone or grassy areas. Water, pop, and candy bars are sold on site, ice cream can be found nearby in the harbour, and staff the Red George Pub set up to sell wine, beer and cider before the show and during intermission. You are welcome to take your treats into the amphitheatre to enjoy, which is a nice perk of an outdoor setting.
The Festival runs July 16-August 20, 2016. Performances are Tuesday to Saturday at 7pm, and rotate between ‘Julius Caesar’ and ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, with matinees at 1pm on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. If you purchase tickets in advance, you can pick them up ahead of time from their office on King Street, or get them from the ticket pick up counter by the gate a half an hour before the start of the show.

Brockville Farmers’ Market Grand Opening

Brockville Multicultural Festival

Join this community festival at the Brockville Memorial Centre for their 35th anniversary of this event on Friday May 6th from 5pm to 10pm and Saturday May 6th from 11am to 10pm. Join booths representing the following participating countries: Canada, Philippines, Turkey, Czech Republic, India, Netherlands, China, France, Belgium, Lebanon, Costa Rica, Ireland, Peru, Ukraine, Greece, and Caribbean. Jane’s Walk

Get to know your neighbourhood a little bit better by participating in Jane’s Walk for Brockville. This year’s theme is The Urban Zoo: Discover the various animals that frequent the habitat along Buell’s creek between Brock and St. Paul’s streets. We will observe life from the small to the complex, from insects to large mammals and birds. Walkers will note focal points along the trail for observing fauna during all seasons of the year. During each hour-long show, audiences will step into a suspense-filled story, finding clues and unraveling mysteries as they tour this magnificent 20,000-square-foot Edwardian mansion.In Mary’s Odyssey, the audience will help a maid solve a mystery and uncover a long-hidden treasure.Catherine’s Creed calls on spectators to set Catherine free by piecing together a puzzle left by a recently deceased public figure. If you missed the shows two weeks ago when they first came to Brockville, you have a final chance this weekend.
