It’s that time of year again, when summer officially turns to fall. Crisp air (it’s coming!), sweater weather, apple picking, and pumpkin spiced beverages all come to mind when this time of year rolls around. On top of all this, there is one important Fall aspect we can’t forget– when the leaves change to vibrant colours, painting the forested landscape beautifully. Luckily for us, the 1000 Islands region offers some unique ways to see these colourful changes. Here are just a few ideas to help you make the most out of this wonderful time of year:
Skywood Eco-Adventure

What better way to take in the beautiful autumn landscape, then be immersed in the forest canopy itself? Fly through the trees on numerous zip lines, or test your skills as you climb through the aerial treks. Enjoy the outdoors and get active at Skywood, where there is an adventure waiting for everyone! Open Thursday-Sunday 9am-5pm, and Monday to Wednesday by appointment only.
1000 Islands Tower

Breathtaking views await at the 1000 Islands Tower, located on Hill Island. A short elevator ride to the top of the tower offers awe-inspiring 360 degree views, and the perfect place to see the autumn colours from unique bird’s eye point of view. Don’t forget your camera!
The tower is open until October 21st, and is offering sunset viewing on Oct 6th and 7th. For more information please click here.
Cruise the St. Lawrence
Grab your jacket and enjoy a fall cruise from Brockville, Rockport, or Gananoque this fall. As you cruise along the river you’ll watch the beautiful scenery pass by, full of charming cottages, mansions, and of course vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows donning the island’s foliage. Boat lines run tours during this magical time of year approximately until the end of October.

Brockville by Bike with Thousand Islands Bicycle Co.

Are you looking to see everything Brockville has to offer or aren’t visiting for long? Are you in search of eye-opening history and vibrant views? Look no further than Thousand Islands Bicycle Co. to tour Brockville’s historic and beautiful downtown. Their friendly and informative guides will take you throughout the scenic downtown area, allowing you to learn more about Brockville while enjoying fresh air and exercise.

The tour kicks off at the newly restored Brockville Railway Tunnel, which is the first railway tunnel in Canada. You will continue along the stunning waterfront, while receiving plenty of information about Brockville’s history from your guide. You follow the route until you reach Fulford Place, the former home of George Fulford, who created the infamous ‘Pink Pills for Pale People.’ This stop is full of interesting facts, so you Historians will need to listen up!  After viewing Fulford Places’ grand exterior and its gardens, you will head back through Brockville along King Street. This street is full of shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants, and we guess you will be finding your way back to these after your ride!
Next you will connect with the Brock Trail, a 7km pathway that runs along Brockville’s downtown, and follows Buell’s Creek north from the waterfront. This pathway takes you through many of the parks found in Brockville, including Hardy Park and Rotary Park. The last stop on the tour is the Brockville Museum, where you will have the ability to continue to explore Brockville’s incredible past. This stop will give you information on the history of the city, the river and even some of the rich who once resided in Brockville.  On top of these stops, even more will be made along the way, but that’s a surprise for you to find out!
Thousand Islands Bicycle Co. bicycle tours are the perfect activity if you’re interested in doing some sight-seeing, while also learning more about the rich history of Brockville. You will get to explore Brockville’s historic downtown area, allowing you to enjoy the waterfront and learn something new about the city. The tours are great for anyone, as they encourage you to be active at a relaxing pace, and they also rent bikes for those you want to do exploring on your own! Thousand Islands Bicycle Co. supplies the bikes, and helmets, so all you need to do is bring your sunscreen, water, and active clothes!
Tours are also offered in Gananoque and along the 1000 Islands Parkway.

The Great Waterway’s “On The Way” Crew Visits Brockville

Our regional tourism organization, The Great Waterway, has embarked on a 26 day adventure from Kingston to Cornwall. They are joined by co-founder and co-owner of Improbable Escapes, HIPSTORY, and the Kingston Collective, Melissa, and actor and executive producer of Stained Tie Films Ltd, Scott.
Melissa writes about her trip to the Aquatarium, Skywood, Fulford Place, a sneak peak of our Railway Tunnel, and more!
“I’m a huge animal lover, so I get really excited to see animals regardless of if they are land or water dwellers. It made my day when we started off the morning with a visit to the Aquatarium in Brockville. Scott and I raced on antique row boats (I obviously won) and then we began to explore the aquarium. There were so many creatures, but my favourite animals were the otters! They were incredibly adorable and it was a fun experience to watch them get fed. I would never have known, but the Aquatarium also has a high ropes course! At first, I thought it was designed for children as it was themed to resemble a ship, but as soon as I started climbing, I realized that it was actually fairly difficult! It was a good challenge. Similar to Skywood, it was a lot of fun and it makes you feel  preeeeetty invincible!”

History can be a BLAST!

If you could go back in time, when would visit? What would you do? At Fort Wellington National Historic Site in Prescott you might find yourself time travelling to the 1800s where you can become a gunner in the Royal Artillery. Better still, they let you fire the cannon!
I must admit, I signed up for Fort Wellington’s Fire a Cannon program because I’ve spent way too many vacations yawning through museum visits and history tours. I was looking for something more exciting.
Fort Wellington was built during the War of 1812 to defend the St. Lawrence River shipping route against a possible attack by the United States, and it was rebuilt to thwart another American invasion during the 1837–1838 rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada. With this tumultuous history, there is no better place to fire a real cannon.
The experience begins at the modern visitor centre with an ominous waiver, which I imagine is not much different than the enlistment papers men signed in the 1800s. After agreeing that I am of age, that I will pay the $73.60 fee, and that I will follow instructions, I am presented with a wool uniform consisting of a blue coat with brass buttons and a hat.  Do I look like a real soldier? Or a bellhop? Or a flying monkey from Wizard of Oz? Either way, I resist the urge to snap a “selfie” as the commander escorts me outside onto the fort field.
With the historic fort as a backdrop, I meet my crew and cannon. “It is so shiny!” I nervously exclaim as the three seasoned gunners exchange glances and get to work teaching this rookie. In the next half hour, I get a crash course in loading a real muzzle-loading cannon from the War of 1812. Through a series of commands, I use a tool called a worm that looks like a giant corkscrew to clear out the barrel, a sponge to cool it down, and a rammer to seat the explosive cartridge. My crew – who seemed so serious at first – exchange stories, tips, and laughs as the sun draws beads of sweat to our brows. After a short period of time, I pass inspection and am ready to fire.
The cannon is loaded. A crowd has formed. I march up to the loaded weapon. I am presented with a fiery wick and final instruction: “Do NOT fire until you hear the command for fire.” Through my earplugs, I can hear only my own nervous breathing. From inside the fort, the huge British flag is blowing in the wind. In front of me, the menacing St. Lawrence River flows between two countries. In this moment, I truly feel like I have gone back in time.
“FIRE!”
The adrenaline rush that follows indescribable. The ground shakes and I feel it in my chest. After a slight pause, I resist the urge to yell “That was AWESOME!”
When the smoke clears, I pose for photos with tourists and regrettably bid farewell to the 1800s and my crew.  The commander congratulates me as I turn in my uniform. A photographer has documented this experience and I am made an honourary gunner at Fort Wellington National Historic Site and presented with a certificate, photos, and dogtags.
I promise to return. And I will. Fort Wellington offers a rare evening whisky tasting seminar at the end of August. What better way to encourage camaraderie among the troops than by sharing a wee dram?

Fort Wellington tells the story of Canadian military history from the War of 1812 up until Confederation in 1867. I feel privileged to have joined the ranks of history, if only for an hour.
If cannon-firing and whisky tastings are not for you, you can visit the historic site more traditionally through tours and interactions with costumed guides. Brockville Loves Canada 150: Canada Day 2017

Canada Day is approaching and Brockville is hosting tons of activities for you to take part in all day long. From the opening ceremonies and cake cutting all the way to the fireworks after dark, there is non-stop fun for you and your family. We have assembled a time line below based on different participating areas in town. Think we missed something? Be sure to let us know! 
UPDATE: “A decision was made to postpone the fireworks from Saturday night at 10:00 p.m. to Sunday night at 10:00 p.m. due the weather forecast. We have no choice as the fireworks staff need at least 8 hours to prepare and unable to work on the barge when there is lightening.”
Update for access to Blockhouse Island on Saturday and Sunday:

The Regatta organizers will be honouring the 8pm free public admission to Blockhouse on Saturday to allow the public to take part in the local Canada 150 celebration and hear local bands. 
However – on Sunday night for the 10pm fireworks viewing, the public will not have free admittance to Blockhouse as it would be unfair to their ticket holders who have purchased tickets to the show. Instead, Centeen Park will be open to the public from 7pm on, and Hardy Park also offers a great view of the fireworks.

Canada 150 Painted Canoe by Clayton Explores
10am-4pm (approx.) Stop by to see Clayton’s painted canoe on Water Street near the Tourism Office. A note from Clayton: “Over the past two years I have been paddling across Ontario and Southern Quebec and got to experience the most beautiful landscapes. What I hope to do with this project is to promote exploring Canada during this milestone year. I have a 16 foot Canoe that I will be painting with designs, symbols and iconic landscapes from across Canada. Once painted the Canoe will travel across Ontario on the Roof of my Mini stopping at various lakes and rivers where the canoe will be photographed and filmed. The canoe would also stop in city centres to promote exploring Canada. Later the footage will be put into a 5 Part short documentary video”

 
Fulford Place and Homewood Museum         
10am-5pm: Mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation with free activities at Fulford Place and free admission to Homewood Museum.
Bring your family to Fulford Place for some good old-fashioned fun, from crafts to twisted balloons to historical games. Come early – the first 150 visitors will receive a free cupcake!
Homewood Museum in nearby Maitland, one of Ontario’s oldest houses, is also offering free admission on Canada Day. Get a glimpse of the life of Dr. Solomon Jones – a United Empire Loyalist and the area’s first physician – and discover the story behind the internationally known Red Fameuse apple. Fireworks:
Fireworks after dusk (approx. 10pm) launched from a city barge located off-shore in front of the Rowing club area. Viewing from Centeen Park, Blockhouse Island, Hardy Park.

Discover Nearby Parks Canada Sites in 2017 for Free

Parks Canada is celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Confederation by offering free admission to all Parks Canada Places in 2017. With the sites even easier to access, this is your chance to get out and explore the natural beauty and historic sites in our region. Please note: not everything is free – camping and specialty program fees still apply
It is recommended that you order your Parks Canada 2017 Discovery Pass online before you plan to travel to make site access easier and more efficient. When the site launched in December, over 900,000 people went online to order their free 2017 Parks Canada Discovery Passes in the first month.
On a local level, we have two Parks Canada sites operating close by: Thousand Islands National Park (found just West of Brockville), and Fort Wellington (in Prescott). Keep reading for a list of what is free and what isn’t at both sites.

Fort Wellington National Historic Site

2017 offers free self-guided entry for all age groups, and special Canada 150 rates for guided tours. Specialty Program fees apply.
The site is open to the public from May 20th-October 9th.
In July and August they are open 7 days/week from 10am-5pm, and in May, June, September and October they are open from Thursday to Monday (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays) from 10am-5pm

Thousand Islands National Park

In 2017, vehicle parking fees will be free in lieu of admission. In addition to the islands and visitor centre, this park operates a number of mainland trail systems and offers boat launching. Fees apply for boat launching, island camping, oTENTiks, mooring, and specialty programs. Click here for a full list of fees
The Park’s operating season is from May 20 – October 9, 2017 which includes Island Services, Jones Creek Trails, Mallorytown Landing boat launch and trailer parking, and the Mallorytown Landing oTENTiks (please note that the oTENTiks will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in September and October). Booking for camping and oTENTik starts on January 18, 8am on the Parks Canada Website
The Visitor Centre will be open from May 20-September 4 from 10am-4pm on weekends from May 20-June 24 and 7 days/week between June 24 and September 4.

  • Activities such as tours or parking that normally carry a separate fee may not be covered by the Discovery Pass.

Ontario Culinary Tourism Award Finalist

Brockville’s Island Breakfast Nominated for Ontario Culinary Tourism Award

The ever-popular Island Breakfast on Refugee Island has become award worthy, being named among three finalists in the Ontario Culinary Tourism Event of the Year. The winner will be announced at Ontario’s Annual Tourism Summit in Ottawa to be held November 21-22 in Ottawa.
The awards, organized by the Tourism Association of Ontario, the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation and the Culinary Tourism Alliance recognize groups who have made a significant contribution to Ontario’s tourism industry.
Island Breakfast takes place in June over four days and features local breakfast fare including local eggs (cooked in a variety of ways from a local supplier), maple syrup and strawberries, all from local farms. Over 60 volunteers contribute their time to transport, cook and serve some 1,500 visitors on Refugee Island.
“This event becomes more popular every year and is an ideal opportunity for people to experience the 1000 Islands,” explained David Beatty, Chair of the Volunteer Committee. “Many people would not have the chance otherwise to experience Island Life, and when you couple a ride on the river with excellent food and local entertainment, it is a perfect event!”
Island Breakfast has attracted visitors from as far away as Germany, England, China, United States and New Zealand along with many local residents. Since inception, the event has grown from attracting 700 visitors during a 3-day event to over 1500 patrons in four days.
Net proceeds from funds raised will go toward building a pavilion on the island.
Island Breakfast’s fellow nominees for this award are Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company’s Beau’s Oktober-fest and Spirit Tree Estates Cidery’s Family Day Wassailing Festival. Update: The winner of this category is Beau’s All Natural Brewing Company’s “Beau’s Oktogerfest” – congrats Beau’s!

Explore The Brock Trail

The Brock Trail is a paved walking and cycling path that runs along Brockville’s waterfront, extends west to St. Lawrence Park, and continues up through town to the north side of the 401 highway.k Trai
Starting at the eastern end, Centeen Park is a popular park for swimming and picnicking, and is also a favourite entry point for scuba divers. An underwater sculpture park is featured offshore of the park in the St. Lawrence River. Heading west along the trail you will pass Canada’s Oldest Railway Tunnel and take a stroll along the Riverwalk on Blockhouse Island. Leaving Blockhouse, the trail will take you past Brockville’s newest attraction, The Aquatarium, be sure to stop in and see what’s new.
Continue along the waterfront to Hardy Park, the site of many summertime events including Brockville Ribfest, Brockville Movies in the Park, Sunday Concerts in the Park, and keep an eye out for plaques with historical facts and points of interest.
At the western edge of the downtown core, the Brock Trail will take you to Brockville’s Rotary Park. With a 400m2 splash pad, a playground, skate park, basketball court, and brand new bicycle pump track, Rotary Park is ideal for youth and families to stop and play.
A new section of the Brock Trail extends the existing trail all the way west to St. Lawrence Park, a scenic and relaxing place to camp, picnic, and spend time at the beach. Day use of the park is free, while there is a fee to camp overnight. St. Lawrence Park is also the departure point for the popular Island Breakfast Event (June 22-25).

Summer 2016 Kick-Off Weekend

With sunny days approaching, Brockville is getting ready to welcome Summer with a number of kick-off events signalling the start of what should be a busy tourism season. The Brockville Farmers’ Market is having their grand opening this weekend, which is a great sign of warmer weather and summer approaching. After two months of being open to the public and receiving feedback from their captive audience, the Aquatarium is also having their grand opening, and will be celebrating with special events throughout their grounds all weekend long. Join in the summer fun with all of these great events happening this weekend:

Brockville Farmers’ Market Grand Opening

The Brockville Farmers’ Market vendor list is completely full for the 2016 season. Join them for our 184th season in Beautiful Downtown Brockville on Saturday May 7th from 8am-1pm. Dignitaries will be on hand to cut the ribbon and declare the market open. Lots of vendors! Come see what’s new this year at the Market! Brockville Multicultural Festival

Join this community festival at the Brockville Memorial Centre for their 35th anniversary of this event on Friday May 6th from 5pm to 10pm and Saturday May 6th from 11am to 10pm. Join booths representing the following participating countries: Canada, Philippines, Turkey, Czech Republic, India, Netherlands, China, France, Belgium, Lebanon, Costa Rica, Ireland, Peru, Ukraine, Greece, and Caribbean. Also enjoy non-stop entertainment on the main stage with dance and music from around the world.

Jane’s Walk

Get to know your neighbourhood a little bit better by participating in Jane’s Walk for Brockville. This year’s theme is The Urban Zoo: Discover the various animals that frequent the habitat along Buell’s creek between Brock and St. Paul’s streets. We will observe life from the small to the complex, from insects to large mammals and birds. Walkers will note focal points along the trail for observing fauna during all seasons of the year. Meet at 2pm at the Elm Street bridge along the Brock Trail.

During each hour-long show, audiences will step into a suspense-filled story, finding clues and unraveling mysteries as they tour this magnificent 20,000-square-foot Edwardian mansion.In Mary’s Odyssey, the audience will help a maid solve a mystery and uncover a long-hidden treasure.Catherine’s Creed calls on spectators to set Catherine free by piecing together a puzzle left by a recently deceased public figure. If you missed the shows two weeks ago when they first came to Brockville, you have a final chance this weekend.
