5 Ways to Beat the Heat in Brockville

With summer in full swing, it’s no surprise that our first heat warning has been issued by Environment Canada. As the temperatures keep rising this summer, we want to make sure you know how to keep cool and healthy.

1. Go swimming

We’re lucky to be based along the St.Lawrence River, and therefore have many places to go swimming. Water along the St.Lawrence is cool and clear, which makes it a great place to cool down. Here are just a few:

  • Centeen Park
  • St. Lawrence Park
  • Cunningham Park
  • Brown’s Bay Beach and Picnic area (Day use fees apply)
  • Kelly’s Beach (Prescott)

Of course, if you’re not a fan of the river, and would prefer something inland, there are local beaches on small lakes just outside of Brockville, including:

2. Visit the Splash pad

Maybe the idea of swimming isn’t a great idea, or your little ones aren’t old enough to go into the deeper waters yet. Take the kids to the the splash pad! Located at 10 Glimore Street, the Brockville Rotary Club has incredible facilities to keep the family entertained. The 400 square metre splash pad is very popular during the summer with toddlers and older children, and is a great way to cool down without going into the water completely.

3. Cool down in the Brockville Tunnel

If you’re out and about and you’re not sure where to go to cool off, we definitely recommend stopping in to see the Brockville Tunnel. Not only is it beautiful and fun to go through, but it stays cool throughout the summer! If you need to get out of the downtown core, you might as well take a stroll through the tunnel to get out of the sun and cool yourself down.

4. Have an ice cream or cool treat

Brockville has no shortage of places to get a cool treat. Visit one of our many ice cream shops and grab of scoop of ice cream (and maybe some water to keep hydrated as well). Here are just a few of the popular locations:

5. Have a picnic (in the shade)

There are countless shady parks scattered throughout the city with benches and picnic tables. Many of them are very shady and close to the water, so that cool breeze will be blowing off the water. Along the river alone we have the following parks:

  • St.Lawrence Park
  • Cunningham Park
  • Henry Street Park
  • Hardy Park
  • Blockhouse Island
  • Centeen Park

Then of course there are all the parks along the Brock Trail and hidden throughout our neighbourhoods. Explore Brockville today to get to know what’s out there and keep cool!

No matter which one you choose to do, make sure you are keeping yourself sun safe. Drink lots of water, and remember:

Slip on a shirt
Slap on a hat
Slop on the sunscreen (and reapply generously!!)
